Deciding On A Therapist
3 Tips for Men in Austin, TX
Most men I’ve worked with weren’t raised to talk about their feelings, or even sit across the room from someone and truly dig into what’s really going on. The truth is, therapy doesn’t have to feel clinical or awkward. It can be a straight forward step into feeling like yourself again.
Whether you’re someone who’s interested to start, or maybe you’re still deciding on which therapist to go with entirely, here are three quick tips:
1. Find someone who gets where you’re coming from.
Not every therapist will understand the unique pressures men in high stress positions face. You want someone who can sit with the weight you’re carrying without judgment and help you make sense of it without overcomplicating things. That doesn’t mean every session is serious or heavy. Sometimes it’s about talking real and cutting through the noise.
2. Look beyond credentials. (Seriously)
Yes, training matters. But the right fit is about more than degrees. It’s about trust, connection, and feeling like you’re not being judged. You should feel like you’re being understood. You should feel like you can say what’s on your mind without having to filter it. One thing I’ve had clients tell me in the past is that their previous therapist had made them feel “like an animal in an enclosure at the zoo”. That’s not something you should ever be feeling in therapy.
3. Don’t wait for a breaking point.
You don’t need to be at rock bottom already to find a benefit from therapy. Some of the strongest men I’ve worked with came in just wanting more clarity/peace, or just to feel like they were back in the driver’s seat.
If you’re a man in Austin and thinking about therapy, I work specifically with guys who are ready to stop absorbing everything like a sponge and just “toughing it out” through life. You don’t have to figure out everything out on your own or have all of the answers. When you’re ready, I’m here to help you get grounded, clear, and start feeling better.
